Sony Headphones Review - The Best Noise Cancelling Headphones

The fifth generation model of Sony's noise-cancelling headphones look a little different than the previous version but they're just as excellent. The headphones are lightweight, comfortable, and come with many features, including Quick Attention mode and Speak-to-Chat.  noise cancelling headphones with mic  feature wear detection and AI-powered DSEE Extreme upscaling audio.

The ANC is powerful, cutting train noises to the background rumble. A "pass through" option lets you hear outside sounds if needed.

1. Sony WH-1000XM5

Sony's headphones are regularly among the top in the market in terms of noise cancelling. The fifth generation of WH1000XM5s are no exception. They provide one of the most impressive noise cancelling experiences we've ever experienced. The moment you put them on and enabling noise cancellation is like walking into a symphony of silence: The sound of engines and the whirring of HVAC systems, creaking metal, even neighboring conversations are all quiet to an unimaginable degree.

The XM5s are also impressive on the audio side with a wide soundstage capable of giving every element of a track room to breathe and shine. For instance, on Billie Eilish's Bad Guy, the drums pound with a satisfying weight and drive as singing voices soaring reverberate across the mix.

Other features that make the XM5s stand out include their smart interactions with your smart device. They can detect when they're removed from your head and stop music, they'll notice that you're on a noisy road and automatically reduce the noise cancelling volume, and they can connect with two devices at once to switch between them based on what you need urgently.

The WH-1000XM5s are also very environmentally friendly. They are made from recycled plastic and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), with a headband made of premium fabric. They include a collapsible case that can be folded into itself, forming the compact pouch. Also included is an 3.5mm to 3.5mm aux cable so you can listen to music in passive mode. The earcups can be removed for simple cleaning. The XM5s also come with rechargeable batteries that can provide up to 20-hours of playtime. They are also equipped with a quick charging system that is twice as fast as conventional USB headphones.

2. Bose QuietComfort 35

The Bose QuietComfort35 II/QC35 II Wireless 2018 are more adaptable than the Audio-Technica ATHDR9BT Wireless headphones thanks to their incredibly comfortable fit, well-balanced audio profile and ANC feature that blocks out a large amount of background noise. The Bose headphones have a 20-hour battery, are more convenient to charge and can be used with a mobile even when the battery is empty. This makes them a better option to those looking for headphones that can be used as commuter or travel headphones.

These premium Bose headphones come with a Google Assistant button, which allows the assistant to play music, answer trivia and read notifications from your smartphone. They have outstanding noise cancellation abilities, and while they're getting long by 2020 standards (and have successors in their line of siblings, the QC35) However, you can still get great deals on these headphones.

As with other Bose ANC headphones, the QC35s do an excellent job of blocking out background noise and their noise reduction technology has advanced over the years. However they're not the top ANC headphones available in comparison to more recent competitors and audiophiles should consider looking elsewhere for better sound quality.

Similar to the Sonys The QC35s are able to connect to two devices at once and "audio share" one of them with a friend, which is useful when you want to listen to music in one ear while talking to another. These headphones are also popular with frequent flyers and feature that classic Bose design that many people adore. SlickWraps or Skin Sticker covers for decals are available for purchase at a reasonable price when you wish to personalize your QC35s.

3. Sony WH-1000XM4

Sony's WH1000XM4s offer nothing in the way of design or comfort improvements from the M3s, however its noise cancellation is a whole new beast. The company has replaced the old system-on chip (SoC) with a new one that it claims will enable it to listen and respond more precisely to ambient sound in real-time by reducing mid- and high-frequency noises using its Dual Noise Sensor technology.

Two feedforward microphones in each earcup capture ambient sound, which is then processed by the QN1 noise-cancelling process to reduce it as fast as possible without altering the quality of your music. The result is an impressive level of noise cancellation that is able to compete with the best headphones in this price range.

There's a sensitivity dial that lets you adjust the noise cancellation to meet your preferences. For instance, if you prefer to listen to ambient sounds in public while at home, you may prefer a more closed off listening experience. This feature also uses geo-location access to apply the right setting based on where you're heading.

The WH1000XM4s can be used for making calls using hands-free technology. They also come with a 30 hour battery life and quick charging capabilities. The WH-1000XM4s also feature an impressive Bluetooth connection that supports multipoint and NFC support. In my tests I noticed that an instant restoration of Paul McCartney's Flaming pie sounded lively and clear with rough mixes, and recordings from home also sounded clear and crisp.

Download the Sony Headphones Connect companion app to maximize the performance of these headphones. You can alter the EQ and enjoy convenience features such as Bluetooth multipoint. It also unlocks some cool new features, like Sony's 360 Reality Audio immersive sound mastering process.

4. Sony WH-CH720N

The Sony WH-CH720N headphones are a excellent choice if you're seeking headphones that provide excellent active noise cancellation for affordable prices. They're a step up from their predecessor that was the 710N Wireless, offering better ANC performance and a better sound quality. The 710N Wireless also has an elongated design and battery lasting up to 35 hours.

These headphones aren't the best for you if you expect top-of-the-line features like LDAC Bluetooth and Smart Listening which incorporates voice assistants. They also don't come with a carrying case or auto-pause feature, and the earcups can't fold which could make them difficult to carry around.

The quality of the WH-CH720N's construction is decent, but not as good a 1000XM5. The headband and earcups made of plastic. They are light and comfortable for long periods, however, they aren't built to withstand heavy use or even a few falls on hard surfaces. The design is also somewhat bulky, and the earcups tend to creak when you move your head. The controls are simple to use, with tactile buttons which provide a satisfying click-like feedback. The ANC can be switched off and on by pressing the power switch. Pressing and holding the button activates Sony's Adaptive audio Control. This feature lets you choose a preset profile based on your location or how you use the headphones.

The WH-CH720N noise cancelling wireless headphones are among the cheapest on the market. It offers excellent ANC for the price, lightweight comfort, and up to 35-hour battery life. If you're a frequent commuter, these headphones are worth considering.

5. Earfun Air Pro

The Air Pro is no different. Earfun headsets and earbuds are well-known for their excellent value. They're effective in calling and thrilling for music, while their ANC block a lot of noise without making you feel as if your ears are drowned. They also come with many features that are available in headphones that cost more than twice as much.

The earbuds have a pronounced bass range that adds rumble and punch to most tracks, while keeping instruments and lead vocals clear and present. This makes them suitable for a broad range of music, although they might sound a bit too loud for certain. They have a consistent frequency response, so they sound the same no matter what you are listening to.

We listened to Missy Elliott's Get Ur Freak On, and the earbuds did an amazing job of highlighting the track's bass-heavy opening with energy and zeal. Stormzy's Vossi Bop had a similar fluid sound, with the treble highlighting the vocals and percussion.

On the phone, voice quality is excellent, even in noisy environments. The earbuds feature the latest Qualcomm chip that ensures background noises, clicks and other distractions are kept to low levels. This is especially true when you are talking to London Underground during rush hour.

The earbuds' Bluetooth connectivity is also excellent, with little to no issues during our tests. They pair and connect quickly and with minimal latency on iOS and Android devices. They are also IPX5 waterproof, which means they're fine for rain and exercise - though you shouldn't immerse them in water. They also come with a carry-on case that holds two and a half batteries which is ideal for travel.
